User research and usability testing

Research is only worth doing if a decision changes because of it. We run the interviews and the sessions, and the same people take what comes out of them into the design — so the findings arrive as work rather than as a document nobody opens.

Where teams usually start

  • Two people on the team are certain about opposite things, and both are guessing.
  • Support answers the same question every week, and nobody knows what in the product causes it.
  • You are about to build something expensive on an assumption no one has checked.
  • There is research from last year, in a deck, that nobody has opened since.

What the work covers

Interviews

Conversations with the people who use the product, scripted so they produce comparable answers rather than a pile of anecdotes.

Usability testing

Someone attempting a real task, on the product or a prototype, while we watch where it goes wrong. Five to eight people per round finds most of it.

Competitor research

What the alternatives make easy, and where the expectation your product is judged against comes from.

Analytics, read alongside

The numbers say where people drop off; the sessions say why. Neither is much use on its own.

Findings you can act on

A short list, ordered by what each costs to fix and what fixing it is worth — not a hundred pages nobody finishes.

Testing after launch

The same loop once it is live, because what people do with a shipped product is rarely what they said they would do.

How it runs

  1. We agree the question first

One or two decisions the research has to inform. Without them it becomes a survey of everything and settles nothing.

  2. Recruiting

Your customers where we can reach them, a panel where we cannot. Five to eight people a round is usually enough for the pattern to repeat.

  3. Sessions, recorded

You get the recordings and the notes, and you are welcome to watch live. Most teams learn more from ten minutes of watching than from any summary.

  4. Findings into design

We take them straight into the work — flows, screens, the fix list — because the point was a decision, not a report.

What it costs

Two monthly subscriptions and a fixed-price option. Pause for up to two months or cancel with three weeks’ notice — the terms are the same whichever you pick.

Where this sits in our product plan

What is user research?

Finding out how people actually use a product, and why they do what they do, rather than inferring it from a dashboard. In practice it is interviews, usability sessions and competitor work, aimed at a decision someone is about to make.

How many people do you need to test with?

Five to eight a round for usability: after that the same problems keep coming back, and a second round after the fixes is worth more than more people in the first. Questions about a market or a segment need more.

Do you need access to our customers?

It is better if we have it, and we can run studies without it using recruited panels. Where the product is specialised — clinicians, accountants, dentists — your customers are the only real source.

What do we get at the end?

Recordings, notes, and a prioritised list of findings with what to do about each. If we are designing as well, the fixes arrive as design work rather than recommendations.

How long does a round take?

Usually one to two weeks from agreeing the question to the findings, recruiting included.

How much does user research cost?

Research is part of the engagement rather than a separate line: Fractional is $4.2K a month, Full-time is $7.7K a month, and fixed-price projects start from $30K. The pricing page states all three in your own currency.
