SaaS product design

A SaaS product is not a set of screens, it is the path from signing up to the thing the subscription is for. Product design is the work of deciding what that path is, in what order, and what the product does when someone takes it a different way.

Where teams usually start

  • Sign-ups are fine and activation is not: people arrive, look around and never come back.
  • The product has grown feature by feature, and no one has looked at the whole path in two years.
  • Every customer asks for something different, and the roadmap is now a list of other people's ideas.
  • You are building the next version and want the structure decided before engineering commits to it.

What the work covers

Onboarding and activation

The first session, the empty state, and the moment the product has to prove itself. Usually where the fastest gains are.

Core flows

The three or four things your customers came to do, designed end to end instead of screen by screen.

Information architecture

What lives where, what the navigation promises, and what happens to it when the next feature lands.

Lean product strategy

For a new product: what the first version has to prove, and what can wait until it has. We would rather cut scope than ship a thin version of everything.

Research and testing

Interviews and testing sessions with your customers, so the decisions above are answers rather than opinions.

Handover and follow-through

Annotated screens, states and edge cases — then we stay while it is built, because that is when the questions arrive.

How it runs

  1. Lean strategy, not a backlog

The first week goes on how someone gets from signing up to the value, and where they fall off. What gets built next follows from the assumption we decide to test first, rather than from the backlog you arrived with.

  2. One priority at a time

We work on what matters most this week, join your standups, planning and reviews, and share progress every week. You can change the priority whenever you need to.

  3. Two to three people

Including the manager, and one person often holds more than one role. Who is involved depends on the stage.

  4. Built in the open

Work in progress is visible in your client space rather than revealed at a milestone. Most projects reach launch-ready in two to three months.

What it costs

Two monthly subscriptions and a fixed-price option. Pause for up to two months or cancel with three weeks’ notice — the terms are the same whichever you pick.

Where this sits in our product plan

What is SaaS product design?

Deciding what the product does, in what order, and what it looks like while doing it — then designing the screens that carry it. It covers onboarding, the core flows, the structure they sit in, and the states nobody demos: empty, slow, failed, expired.

How is it different from UI/UX design?

The same people and the same craft, aimed a level earlier. UI/UX design improves the product you have; product design decides what the next version of it should be. Most engagements move between the two.

How long does a SaaS project take?

Most reach launch-ready in two to three months. We start with an MVP that tests the assumption the business rests on, so demand is proven before anyone pays to scale it.

How much does SaaS product design cost?

Fractional is $4.2K a month, Full-time is $7.7K a month, and fixed-price projects start from $30K. The pricing page states all three in your own currency.

Do you do the engineering as well?

We build MVPs ourselves with AI-assisted workflows, and keep a vetted network of engineers for the rest. On an existing product we design for your team and stay available while they build.

Can you work with our existing design system?

Yes — that is the usual case. We design inside what your engineers already build against, and tell you when something in it is the reason a flow keeps going wrong.
